1. Horsepower and engine family

2. Outboard vs. sterndrive

An outboard swap is usually simpler than a MerCruiser sterndrive repower, which may involve the engine, the drive, and the transom assembly. Buying a matched sterndrive package keeps the gear ratio and drive correct and simplifies the job.

3. Rigging, controls and props

Switching brands or moving to digital throttle & shift (DTS) can mean new controls, gauges, harnesses and rigging. The right propeller is critical to getting the performance you paid for.

4. Labor and installation
