What Is Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS)?
If you are looking at a modern Mercury repower you will run into DTS. Here is what it actually is and why it changes the quote.
Cables vs. wires
Traditional controls use physical push-pull cables running from the throttle lever to the engine. Digital Throttle & Shift replaces those cables with an electronic signal: the control head reports your lever position and the engine's computer acts on it.
What you notice
- Shifting. Gear changes become a quiet, consistent click instead of a mechanical clunk.
- Throttle feel. Smooth and precise, with no cable friction, slop or stiffness — and it does not degrade as cables age.
- No cable maintenance. Nothing to stretch, bind, corrode or periodically adjust.
- Multi-engine sync. On twins and triples, all engines respond identically from one lever.
What DTS unlocks
Because the throttle is already electronic, DTS is the foundation for features that cables cannot support — joystick piloting, Skyhook station keeping, autopilot integration and advanced trim and launch control. If any of those are on your wish list now or later, DTS is a prerequisite.
What it means for your repower
This is the important part. Moving from a cable-controlled engine to DTS is not just an engine swap — it requires compatible DTS control heads, the harness and usually new gauges or a compatible display. That is real additional cost on top of the engine, and it is the most common reason a repower quote comes in above a customer's first guess.
Is it worth it?
On a larger boat, a multi-engine setup, or any boat where you want joystick control, it is usually an easy yes. On a simple single-engine runabout where a cable system works fine, it is a genuine choice rather than an obvious upgrade.
